Mieke Groot was trained first as a jeweller and then in the glass department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, graduating in 1976.Together with Richard Meitner she later founded General Glass Studio in Amsterdam. Here, since 1976 she has worked primarily with the techniques of glassblowing and enamelling, creating objects which have evolved in significant and clear ways. Her work has become internationally known, highly respected, and is included in many public collections in many countries of Europe, the United States and Japan.
Mieke's work, throughout her career has been informed and inspired by her frequent travels. This is particularly clear from 1994, after the first of her many travels in Africa. Form, color, and 'skin' of these works can easily be traced back to the sources of their inspiration. The dryness of the earth in some places, parched, cracking, the brilliance of color under the relentless strong sunlight and heat of Africa,  the closed container form, with only a small access hole, to guard what is held, keeping it safe from heat, insects and other assailants of its content. The African penchant for ornamentation is another influence on her very recent work, hers a reproduction of its richness through a translation in form, subject and material.
